چکیده

I N recent years, several notes in this journal have called attention to the distinctive wing-flashing of the Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) , in which the wings are opened upward at about 45” in a series of jerking movements, then closed. In this display, large white wing patches are exposed. The function of this behavior remains unknown; but, since the display is most frequently seen being performed by birds that are foraging on the ground, it has been suggested (Gander, 1931; Allen, 1947) that exposure of the contrastingly patterned wings facilitates food-getting by startling the more active insect types and illuminatin, v the more sluggish types in dark areas on the ground. This interpretation has been questioned, however, by Sutton (1946) and Halle (1948), who noted that wing-flashing also occurs in the Calandria Mockingbird (Mimus saturninus) , and by Haverschmidt’ s (1953) and Whitaker’ s (1957) observations on M. giluus, species which lack white patches in the wings. An understanding of the functional significance of this behavior will be achieved only when we have more complete information on the behavioral contexts in which it appears. Th ere ore, the following notes on its use in f agonistic situations may be of some value.

Effect of Flashing Brake Lights on Drivers\' Brake Reaction Time ‎and Release Gas Pedal Time

Objective: It is believed that drivers play a crucial role in accidents. Paying attention to brake lights, a driver may find out about danger and react. Rear-end collision accidents refer to the part of the accidents due to driver inattention or slow reaction. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dynamic flashing brake lights (7 Hz) on drivers' brake reaction time using the driv...

Effect of Wing Sweep Angle on the Vortex Interaction of a Tail-Wing Configuration

The goal of this investigation is to study the effect of wing sweep angle on the horizontal wing-body- tail configurations in subsonic flow. For this purpose, a series of wind tunnel tests were conducted on a model having a moveable horizontal tail and a wing planform with different sweep angles. Tests were performed at different tail deflection angles. Static surface pressure distribution over...

Experimental Study of Vortex Shapes behind a Wing Equipped with Different Winglets

An extensive experimental study is conducted to examine effects of different winglet-shapes and orientations on the vortex behind a wing, static surface pressure over the wing, and wing wake of a swept wing at various angles of attack. Four types of winglets, spiroid (forward and aft), blended, and winggrid are used in this investigation. Wing static surface pressure measurements are obtained f...

The origin and diversification of Galapagos mockingbirds.

Evolutionary radiations of colonists on archipelagos provide valuable insight into mechanisms and modes of speciation. The apparent diversification of Galapagos mockingbirds (Nesomimus) provoked Darwin's initial conception of adaptive radiation, but the monophyly of this historically important exemplar has not been evaluated with molecular data. Additionally, as with most Galapagos organisms, w...

Hybrid ancestry of an island subspecies of Galápagos mockingbird explains discordant gene trees.

Introgression of genes through hybridization has been proposed to be an important driver of speciation, but in animals this has been shown only in relatively few cases until recently. Additionally, introgressive hybridization among non-sister species leads to a change in the gene tree topology of the concerned loci and thus complicates phylogenetic reconstruction. However, such cases of ancient...
